John Varley, the chief executive of Barclays, walks us through the company's first-half results, released this morning, with particular attention paid to explaining lower net costs, the improving impairment story, customer franchise relations and the difficult corporate environment in Spain. Varley also discusses the performance of the BarCap business and Barclay's liquiditiy and funding position, having reviewed banks' lending levels at present. Further discussion centres around the macroeconomic climate, the regulatory debate and the outlook for the company going forward. Varley explains why he doesn't think a double dip recession is on the horizon, and though he thinks the banking sector may not be out of the dark just yet he says he believes the light at the end of the tunnel has got brighter.
